Whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple, or in a larger group, we have daily departures to accommodate you. This tour is designed for travelers who are short on time or to acclimatize for upcoming longer trips.

Throughout the rainbow mountain trek, the difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging, which is mainly due to the high altitude that exceeds 5,000 meters.
Even though Rainbow Mountain hike is usually full of tourists, we start our adventure very early to be the first to arrive. In this way, you can enjoy the tranquility and beauty without much interruption. We take our time and enjoy the hike with no pressure.

On this trek you can also visit the red valley, expect to immerse yourself in the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the small communities that they still maintain, that living culture of the Inca ancestors, observe numerous herds of llamas and alpacas grazing in the mountains and be witness firsthand millions of years of geological history. The imposing mountainous landscape will surely be the protagonist of your photographs.

  • Hike among some of the most stunning Andean landscapes imaginable and let Mother Nature whisk you away in her sheer beauty.

DAY 1Cusco - Cusipata town - Rainbow Mountain - Red Valley

Places we will arrive
Cusco
Vilcanota River
Cusipata
Rainbow Mountain
Red Valley
Cusco Hotel

Our adventure to the rainbow mountain tour begins at 4:00 am. We will pick you up at the door of your accommodation to go for 3 hours to the South Valley of Cusco in our private transport. Despite the early morning.
Along the way, we will see picturesque Andean towns, agricultural platforms from the Inca era, fertile valleys, beautiful rolling mountains and lagoons. We will stop and watch the herds of llamas and alpacas that will entertain you while you enjoy a delicious continental breakfast in the Cusipata community, to give you the nutritional boost you need to start the trek.

We will continue our journey until we reach the starting point of the trek at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft. There we will start on a winding road in the middle of the Andean mountains that follows a beautiful stream. As you ascend, you will be rewarded with the breathtaking view of Ausangate Mountain (6,372m/20,905ft). Take a few minutes to try to understand why this mountain is a living deity for the Andean people.
This remote region is home to many people and you will have the opportunity to see them working the land. You will also be surprised to see the traditional clothing that they use and make themselves thanks to the textile artistic talents that the Incas have inherited from their ancestors. This is one of the many ways in which an ancient culture is preserved in the rural regions of Peru that refuses to submit to the rules of the Western world. Your guide will teach you the meaning of some clothes and, if you want, you can ask him to teach you some words in Quechua, the native language of many inhabitants of the area and which has been spoken since Inca times.

After an hour and a half of hiking, we will arrive at the incredible Rainbow Mountain of Cusco (5,100 m / 16,732 ft). Take your time to admire the amazing beauty of this impressive natural formation and feel the thrill of witnessing a unique natural site. You will explore a little the surroundings like the red valley and enjoy the impressive landscape while your guide explains the theories that exist about the origin of this mountain that seems to be taken from a colorful dream. Take this opportunity to take some amazing photos or just soak in the scenery. We will spend between 30 minutes and an hour at the top, depending on the speed of the hike and the weather conditions.

It will take us another hour to reach the starting point of the walk, from where we will board our transport to the restaurant in Cusipata and enjoy a buffet lunch. Then, we will board our private transport again to return to the city of Cusco. We will leave you at the door of your accommodation to rest your tired legs after the rainbow mountain hike.

> Information meeting or briefing

The night before your trip to Rainbow Mountain tour, information meetings are held at your hotel at 6 pm with your trekking guide. And if you cannot attend at this time, you must arrange to do it at another time.
During the briefing, you will receive your duffel bag for your belongings that you intend to take on the hike, which will not be in your backpack.
These informational meetings last approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

> What can I do to prevent altitude sickness?

We recommend drinking plenty of water and drinking coca tea that can be ordered wherever you want, it can also be prepared with boiled water and dried coca leaves. At least one day before the Rainbow Mountain trek we recommend you eat light foods and if you have any medication prescribed by your doctor you can take it and the best thing you can do is keep in mind that you will be fine.

>Will the altitude affect me?

When traveling through the Andes in Peru, some people will experience effects of the altitude. But these day hikes like Rainbow Mountain tour help you acclimatize for the next longer or higher hikes you may take. If in case you suffer from altitude sickness, we have what it takes to help you with the symptoms.

>Can I go on horseback to the humantay lagoon hike?

Yes, you can go on horseback to Rainbow Mountain hike, you can rent horses directly with the locals that cost between 60 and 80 soles per person and if you book a private tour the horse is included and it will be easier for you.

> Payment of trek balance in Cusco

The trek you have booked must be paid in full at the time of breifing or days before departure.

We would greatly appreciate it if you would pay the balance of the trip in cash in US dollars or in local currency. To withdraw here in Cusco we have several ATMs along Av. El Sol (either in US dollars or in local Peruvian soles).
You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 8% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance with traveler’s checks.

> Pick up from your hotel

Our PERU TREK Company transports will pick you up from your hotel for Rainbow Mountain trek, as long as you are in the Historic Center of Cusco. Pick-up time will be coordinated with your guide at the briefing. The pick-up time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic.
Cusco is a very old city, therefore it has many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnb may be located on streets with no car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to carry luggage. We strongly recommend that you book an accommodation with good access.

> Group tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also agree that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, everyone can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wants to modify the route; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications can be made.

> Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored in our office (you can coordinate during the day of the briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both for free.
Any equipment you don’t need on the trek can be safely stored at your hotel. Almost all hotels will offer this service. Do not leave valuables with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and get an itemized receipt (in the unlikely event of theft, many insurance companies require you to have a copy of the receipt with all items). It’s best to put items like credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope for added peace of mind.

> Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are often frequent in Peru, and this can interrupt some of our planned tours. They can block the roads and take control of the railroad tracks. However, we will try to keep your tour as planned, even if it means leaving the night before your scheduled date. In these circumstances, tours can also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our top priority and decisions will be made appropriately.

> Lost objects

You are responsible for your personal belongings during the Rainbow Mountain full day. Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to take everything once you leave your bus, tents, and restaurants.

This was an absolutely amazing experience with PERU TREK! Elena was the best guide we could have asked for. She played fun uplifting music for us on the walk and she made sure we were all good. At the top she helped us take pictures and he was so much fun to be with. This was a once in a lifetime experience.

Enthusiastic and encouraging guides and a knowledgeable driver made this trip so much more than just a hike to a beautiful place. Like the best tours, our guides made us feel like an adventure while providing as much safety and guidance as they could. The views, the interactions with the locals (who can apparently scale the mountain without getting your heart rate up), and the experience is second to none. Reserve them right now!
As we made our way up the mountain, I realized that other travelers didn’t have guides that were as understanding or practical. Work with these guys! I recommend the PERU TREK company team.

This was an amazing tour. I recommend it to anyone who has an extra day in Cusco to travel with the PERU TREK company. Our guide Ana was amazing. Very knowledgeable and very personable. My husband and I struggled quite a bit with altitude sickness during the hike, and she stayed with us and continued to check on us, even when we were going very slowly.

The food was excellent. I love that we were the first to go up the mountain; our photos were great! Every staff member we interacted with was amazing.
