Feel the energy of the Apus on this hike
The Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca or the Mountain of 7 Colors was not really ‘discovered’ until 2015. Before, it had been covered by thick layers of snow. Only when the snow began to melt could the locals see the beauty beneath.
This impressive formation of Mother Nature is located 5,200 meters above sea level and is a real wonder. You will have to get up early in the morning if you want to get to and from Cusco in one day, but it is worth it. Expect to travel a few hours and walk another 3 or 4 on the most popular route.
Along the way, you’ll experience magnificent scenery as you leave the city and head into the mountains. You will see many small villages and experience how locals live in these remote parts of Peru.
Once you start walking, the landscapes are breathtaking and the hills stretch as far as the eye can see in all directions. You will see many llamas and alpacas grazing on the grass in their natural habitat. Once you reach the top, take your time to enjoy the incredible landscape and, of course, the prominent Vinicunca, which takes center stage.
The Peruvian Andes are subject to two distinct seasons: the dry season, which lasts approximately from April to October; and the rainy season, which runs from November to March (with the highest rainfall months being January and February). April and October are also nice as this is usually when the seasons are in transition.
Due to its high altitude and frigid air, the rainy season in the region often turns into snowfall on Rainbow Mountain peru hike. Visitors to Rainbow Mountain should come prepared with all-weather clothing, as conditions can also change quickly.
Sun protection: Whether it is cloudless or cloudy, you need to make sure you are well protected from the sun’s strong rays. At this altitude, you can get burned easily and the light can be almost blinding. Bring a sun hat, quality sunglasses, and factor 50+ sunscreen.
Toilet paper and hand sanitizer: If you need to use the bathroom here, there probably won’t be toilet paper. It is also a good idea to bring disinfectant gel to freshen up afterwards.
Small backpack: You will need a small backpack to carry all the items you need.
Warm clothes: Whatever the time of year, you’ll need plenty of layers. Thermal underwear is a great idea and then other thin layers that you can take off or put back on as your body changes temperature. When you walk, you will get hot, but you will soon cool down when you stand at the top for a few minutes.
Excellent Footwear: The trail is relatively flat, but there are parts of rough terrain and changing weather conditions can make parts slippery or rough and dry. We recommend hiking boots or shoes with good grip and warm socks to keep your feet comfortable.
Rain gear: At the very least, you need a thin poncho in case it rains. If you get wet, the ride will be much less pleasant and you will feel uncomfortable, so it is best to be prepared.
Water: This is something you cannot forget, as we have already mentioned. Take small sips instead of swallowing, so you don’t have to suddenly run to the bathroom.
Cash in small denominations: if you travel alone, you must pay the entrance fee of 10 soles. You should also check if the travel agency you travel with includes it. It’s always good to have a little money for a drink or snack when you get to the top, as some locals sell them. You can even try fried alpaca!
