Frequent Questions

Here is a list of the frequently asked questions of our passengers

1How difficult is the Lares Trek?

The trek from Lares to Machu Picchu is considered a moderate hike. It is not a technical hike, but the altitude may affect some people. We recommend purchasing a wooden walking stick while in Cusco, as it will help with your balance and reduce the load on your knees. We ask that you do not use a metal tipped cane as it may damage the fragile environment along the trail.

2Best time to hike Lares trek to Machu Picchu

In short, the best time to hike from Lares to Machu Picchu is during the dry season from April to August. Also, the trail is not packed with tourists or large groups of people and much more so in the rainy season from December to March. While from September to November the days are usually sunny, but sometimes it just gets cloudy and threatens to rain, but rain or shine, overall it’s still a good season. explore lares treks in an unforgettable experience.

3Do porters carry our luggage while on the Lares Trek?

No, llamas, pack mules and/or horses will be provided to carry your personal items. You will still need to bring a day pack to carry any essentials you want or need, such as water, snacks, camera, sweater, raincoat, etc.

4Who should choose lares trek?

Take the Lares Trek to learn about life in the mountains of the Peruvian Andes, because you will witness a more authentic way of life of the Quechua people who live in this part of Cusco; and there you will have the opportunity to learn about their wisdom, religion and philosophy. In addition to the mountain towns and local culture, enjoy the clear blue lakes, the valleys inhabited by alpacas, the attractive mountain peaks and many other wonders that this trek still has to offer.

5Is Water Included on the Trip?

Yes. You’ll need to make sure you take enough water for the first morning of your trek, but after this, we’ll provide you with boiled water to fill your bottle or pouch with at every meal and campsite. The water is clean and perfectly safe for you to drink, so you don’t need to worry in that respect.
Make sure you take a reusable bottle or Camelbak to use the entire trek. We prefer not to use plastic bottles to help protect the environment and the routes.

6Do I need to bring extra money for the trip?

Although everything is paid for in advance and included in the package, you definitely need to take some extra cash with you for the trek. Around 300 Peruvian soles are enough. Don’t take dollars, as these aren’t liable to tender in rural parts of the country.

You might not need to use any at all, but it’s always a good idea in case of emergencies or if you need to buy anything along the way. You might also find that you feel tired on a part of the route and would like to hire a horse for a small section.

7Can I Do the Trek With Kids?

Due to the somewhat challenging hike and weather conditions, we do not recommend traveling with small children. You will likely have to carry them for much of the way, making it even more difficult for you.
We recommend that the earliest age that children should join this walk is 10 years old. As long as your child is active and you walk a lot on the way home, you should be fine.

8Altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness can hit some people hard, therefore consider going prepared and taking the right medication. Indeed most head guides carry first aid kits and an oxygen bottle because the headaches and nausea can be very unpleasant. Also, depending on the year season, the altitude and rain can make it even extra difficult to hike uphill, but you’ll never be so sick that you can’t appreciate the view.

9Do I need walking sticks?

If you are used to hiking with sticks, take them with you, they will be worth it. You’ll use them to prevent nasty falls while hiking, as well as to keep your ankle and knee joints safe on the mountain trail. Explore lares treks safely.

10What about medications?

This is just a reminder because not everyone can take the same medication. According to specialists and pharmacists, it is essential to have some paracetamol and ibuprofen as pain relievers. The next thing that could get annoying on a hike is diarrhea, so to help stop it, consider taking Imodium pills and, of course, acetazolamide for altitude sickness.

No tour guide or tour agent may prescribe any prescription or pill of any kind. What they do is take a basic first-aid kit with pharmacy medicines where if the tourist agrees to take it because it is the same as the doctor’s suggestion, then he takes it. Explore Lares treks in the most pleasant way.

11Lares trek without a guide?

It is possible to explore Lares trek on your own, however it will depend on your previous experience doing solo treks over 13,000 feet, also the time spent acclimatizing in Cusco before heading to Lares. As is known, the Lares walk is not one way, it is more than one, and each one has a different level of difficulty.

Still, do you want to do it on your own? Well, let’s talk a little more, the changeable weather in the mountains, especially in the rainy season, makes it difficult, sometimes heavy snowfall covers all traces of the path. Unless there is a guided group for you to follow, although the locals are friendly they will not speak English so Spanish or Quechua is a very helpful resource for communication. Also, beware of country dogs, they would be aggressive at times.

12What Is the Food Like on the Trek?

One of the aspects that probably surprises you the most is the food during the walk. Most guests mention how much they enjoyed the variety of dishes prepared by our professional chefs along the way. You will be surprised by the food you eat in the middle of the mountains.

We know that nutrition on the routes is essential, since you need a lot of energy to get through each day. For this reason, we work long and hard, together with our chefs and the best nutritionists, to put together the most complete menu possible for the Lares trek.

Every time you sit down to eat, you’ll be greeted with a variety of options to choose from, including all the essential food groups for a well-balanced meal every time.

If you have allergies or prefer not to eat certain foods, you should not worry. All you need to do is let us know before the trek and we’ll make sure you eat as well as everyone else in your group and enjoy as many fresh, local ingredients as possible.

It gets even better: we’ll also give you a cloth bag for which we provide snacks every morning to keep you going. We also organize a special ‘tea hour’ at each camp with tasty light bites and hot drinks to keep you going until dinner. explore lares treks in a unique adventure.
