Peru’s northern coast offers wild nature that is largely untouched by resorts and tourism. Small fishing villages remain charmingly rustic despite being world-class surf destinations. Colourful local fleets, old-school and perfect for Polaroid photos, offer real fresh catches in almost every restaurant.
Horseback riding, whale watching, yoga and surfing for beginners and world elite alike – there is no shortage of activities, whether you are looking for water sports excitement or total relaxation. As it is the sunniest part of the country, the region has year-round appeal, although it is much busier with Limeños and locals in the peak summer season from December to March.
The region’s point of interest is the town of Máncora, famous for its beaches and consistent surfing and still very much a fishing village, with a strong local identity and culture. Nearby are the towns and cities of Vichayito, Los Órganos, Punta Sal and Zorritos. On this stretch of Peruvian coastline, it’s entirely possible to find yourself alone on a wild beach, just you, the waves, and the birds.
Oh, and the food… otherworldly fresh fish straight from the ocean, and some of the most unique ceviches with endemic clams, cooked by locals with the most incredible Peruvian seasoning.
A perfect end to a Peruvian trip, a dream place to enjoy the sea to the fullest, or simply, a remote retreat to relax and unwind.
